Requirements for Chiropractic Colleges

Not every state in this great country of ours is home to any chiropractic colleges, but that certainly shouldn't stop you from pursuing this educational choice if that is your goal in life. On the other hand, chiropractors do exist in every state, so chances are good being a Doctor of Chiropractic is certainly a good choice for your future. Deciding on any type of higher learning often feels like a leap of faith in terms of your qualifications, the school's qualifications, and the coursework expected to be completed. If looking at chiropractic colleges is something you are planning to do, here is some general information you may need along the way.

One of the first places to start exploring your chiropractic college's choices is with the Council on Chiropractic Education. Only the finest schools are listed among their members and all of them have been carefully reviewed to make sure they meet the high standards expecting of chiropractic teaching school. Each school has been screened to meet the minimum guidelines. Even with this invaluable tool at your disposal, you will still need to check with the state guidelines where you plan to practice. You may discover you need additional training to be licensed in your region of the country.

While having a bachelor's degree in one of the sciences or liberal arts is an advantage on your chiropractic college's application, only one school currently requires one. What you will need to get into any of the schools is at least 90 semester hours and certain science courses under your belt. If you have taken biology, chemistry, both organic and non organic, and microbiology you are in good shape. Some of the other requirements include physics, neurology, and anatomy. Even courses like obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, and orthopedics can be huge benefits to getting into the chiropractic school of your choice.

The chiropractic college's curriculum is almost always 4200 hours of education. It will take roughly four years to complete and you can expect to spend your time in regular classroom settings, doing laboratory work, and gaining clinical experience. The last two years of the program are especially devoted to clinical study and practice. You will also spend this time focusing on geriatrics, nutrition, and neurology. It is important to remember that chiropractic treats the entire body as a whole, so you have to be well educated on how those systems work together.

Choosing one of the closest chiropractic colleges will be simple with the help of the Council on Chiropractic Education and making thoughtful decisions on your own. This profession is growing quickly and there doesn’t seem to be an end to the growth in sight.
